Why Wildfire Smoke Is Different From Regular Dust

Wildfire smoke is not ordinary dust. It contains ultra-fine PM2.5 particles — particles smaller than 2.5 microns — that are small enough to penetrate deep into lung tissue and cross into the bloodstream. These particles are also small enough to bypass most standard HVAC filters and penetrate deep into duct systems.

Wildfire smoke also contains hundreds of toxic compounds including benzene, formaldehyde, acrolein, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals. These compounds adsorb onto duct surfaces and continue off-gassing into your living spaces for months after the smoke event ends — even after the smoke smell is gone.

New Mexico's Wildfire Exposure

New Mexico has experienced some of the largest wildfires in US history in recent years. The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire of 2022 — the largest in NM history — burned over 340,000 acres and exposed Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and surrounding communities to weeks of heavy smoke. The Cerro Pelado, Black Fire, and numerous smaller fires have created recurring smoke events throughout the state.
